A Closer Look at Wildlife Safaris in Rwanda and Uganda

Compared to Gorilla Trekking safaris, wildlife tours in Uganda and Rwanda offer a wider diversity of experiences across a broader range of ecosystems and altitudes. It is possible to see the savanna animals in both countries. In Uganda, most savanna parks have been restocked with games and are steadily returning to their former status. The best place for a wildlife safari is Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. In Rwanda, Akagera National Park is the largest Savannah Park and the best place to enjoy day safaris. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the range of nature and birding, where it is possible to see many primates and even the elusive Mountain Gorillas, in a variety of stunning locations from the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Southwestern Uganda. Although still an emerging market, specialist birdwatching tours are also available in both Uganda and Rwanda. Recommended general tour itineraries including wildlife tours, though itineraries can be easily adjusted to suit your particular interests.

Uganda and Rwanda are set in the eastern rainforest bird belt of Africa and combine to offer an amazing diversity and abundance of birdlife. This, combined with the great range of other ecotourism activities on offer, means that people interested in birding are sure to enjoy a memorable trip to either country. Both countries are home to several endemic species such as the rare Golden Monkeys which can be tracked on a 2-day visit to either Volcanoes National Park or Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and offer great opportunities to spot some rare and elusive birds. Although not necessarily the first thing to come to mind when planning a trip to Uganda or Rwanda, Primates can easily be incorporated into a Gorilla safari or wildlife tour.

An Overview of Safaris in Uganda

Uganda safaris cover 10 national parks, 12 wildlife reserves and 14 wildlife sanctuaries. Each of these protected areas has different attractions and a varying eco-system. These protected areas have a variety of wildlife and bird species including the big five. National parks such as Lake Mburo have significant numbers of Impala, Eland and Topi, other parks such as Murchison Falls have large populations of elephants and buffalo while Kidepo national parks boast a good population of lions. Wildlife reserves offer a range of activities including, sport fishing, trophy hunting, animal and bird watching and nature walks. No activities involving the killing of wild game are carried out during the safaris. This leaves the areas rich with wildlife. Troop topping the list of Uganda’s wildlife attractions are gorillas and chimpanzees that visitors can see in their natural environment. This is what makes Uganda safaris one of the most thrilling and complete wildlife experiences in Africa. The long-standing Uganda safaris are arguably the most unique and diverse on the African continent. Uganda safaris consist of savanna safaris or game viewing, primates tour, sightseeing tours, mountain hiking as well as birding safaris.
